The small historic village of Hever is located a few kilometres west of Royal Tunbridge Wells in the County of Kent in south-east England. It lies adjacent to the River Eden and is set amongst beautiful unspoiled countryside comprised of farmland and woodlands. Home to just over 1,000 residents, Hever is a popular tourist destination due to its famous Hever Castle, childhood home to Anne Boleyn, and provides locals and visitors alike with a public house, St Peter’s Church and of the course the castle. Originally built in 1272, Hever Castle became the home of the Bullen family between 1462 and 1539, who are better known by their later name of Boleyn. Anne Boleyn, became the second wife of King Henry VIII, and may have been born at Hever Castle although it is known that she did spend much of her youth here. The castle is known to have been visited by Henry VIII during their courtship and eventually became a royal possession upon the death of Anne’s father, Thomas Boleyn. Today the castle is a popular tourist destination with visitors attracted for its fascinating history.
