| New South Wales, Australia |
Sydney is the oldest, largest and one of the most beautiful cities in Australia as well as being the capital of the State of New South Wales. The city is located on the shores of the spectacular Sydney Harbour and boasts some of the world’s most iconic images in the Sydney Opera House, Centrepoint Tower, Luna Park and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Sydney is the birthplace of a nation and the site of the first European settlement in Australia, and today has grown to become a thriving cosmopolitan city of busy cafes and enticing restaurants, a city of historic buildings and lush parks and gardens, a city of modern skyscrapers and hectic shopping malls, a city of colourful markets and luxury hotels, but above all a welcoming and friendly city, proud of its’ individuality and confident of its’ success. Sydney is a delightful city, providing visitors with plenty to do and see, full of interesting attractions, exciting activities and a diverse entertainments scene. Home to several notable locations worthy of exploration, Sydney’s highlights include Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, The Rocks and Kings Cross, as well as its’ many enticing seaside destinations such as Bondi Beach and Manly. Visitors should endeavour to enjoy the city from different perspectives by taking a ferry ride, catching the mono-rail, climbing the Harbour Bridge or seeing the city from the top of Centrepoint Tower. Sydney, with a population of over 4.5 million, is a remarkably easy city to explore as most attractions are within relatively close walking distance from the harbour and the C.B.D. The city is however provided with an excellent train, bus and ferry service, so if destinations such as Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay, Manly or Bondi are visited, it isn’t a problem. Major areas of interest include Darling Harbour which centres around Cockle Bay and includes numerous entertainment facilities such as the Australian Maritime Museum, Sydney Aquarium, Wildlife World, the Star City Casino and the Chinese Gardens. Darling Harbour also provides easy access to the nearby IMAX Theatre and the bustling and exciting Chinatown, a part of Sydney where visitors can experience one side of this cosmopolitan city. Experience the history of Sydney by visiting an area known as the ‘Rocks’ which is located close to the place where the first settlement was established in 1788, and lies adjacent to Circular Quay, the main ferry hub of Sydney Harbour. From here it’s just a short walk to see the Opera House where it is advisable to take one of the exceptional tours to see inside this iconic building. For some visitors, another area which may be worth a visit is Kings Cross, which during the day is filled with activity revolving around its many cafes and restaurants; while in the evening and at night it’s awash with another type of entertainment. Historically known as the ‘Red Light’ district of Sydney, the ‘Cross’ as it’s affectionately called, still offers an insight into a seedier side of life! Whatever visitors are looking for while they are on holiday, Sydney always seem to meet the challenge. Enjoy.
