Hallstatt
Show Map
Gmunden, Upper Austria, Austria
Hallstatt is considered to be one of the prettiest villages in the Salzkammergut region of the State of Upper Austria. Home to just over 1,000 lucky residents, Hallstatt is perched on the waterline of the fjord-like Hallstatter Lake the shores of which rise steeply from the very water’s edge creating an amazing scenic spectacle!! Centered around the small Market Square which is surrounded by beautiful traditional Austrian buildings, Hallstatt’s cobbled streets are generally almost traffic free, making exploring this tiny historic town an easy affair. Remote, traffic free and surrounded by awesome scenery, what more could you ask for!!

Located at the site of Austria’s earliest known salt deposits, Hallstatt has given its name to an early Iron Age culture, the Hallstatt culture (8th to 6th B.C.), and is now a U.N.E.S.C.O World Heritage Site for Cultural and Natural Heritage. Considered a major Celtic archaeological landmark, Hallstatt was made famous for the pre-historic site that was found in the 19th century which contained over 4,000 bodies in over 1,000 burial sites. Although this early Celtic settlement was drawn to the area for the rich deposits of salt, Hallstatt has been known for its salt since 5,000 B.C. as archaeological evidence supports, making this one of the oldest known mining sites in the world. This valuable and highly sought after resource has been traded all around Europe and has added great wealth to the area. For those interested it is possible to catch a funicular up to the world’s first known salt mine which is located above this small village. Here it is possible to take an informative tour and if your interest is whetted, it is possible later to make a visit to the World Heritage Museum where you can see the whole story of the ‘salt mine village of Hallstatt’ from 7,000 years ago!!

While in the village it is interesting to take a short walk up to the Bone House which is located in Michaels Chapel and protects the skulls of people who have passed away. This tradition began in 1720 due to the limited ground available for full permanent burials. Then there is the 12th century Roman Catholic Church with its prominent tower and its small cemetery. From here great views over the lake and village can be enjoyed. If you are staying in the area for a longer period take advantage of the beautiful countryside and try some walking, or visit the ice caves at Obertraun. For more information on Hallstatt or the Salzkammergut region, visit the girls at the tourist office which is located in the centre of the village.
