Canada
Canada is recognised as the second largest country in the world after Russia and covers a staggering 9.9 million square kilometres much of it being vast, pristine wilderness. It is however a country worthy of exploration as Canada is home to a rich and varied heritage which offers visitors unequalled opportunities to enjoy some of the world’s top travel destinations. These include the historic, walled city of Quebec which was founded in 1608 making it one of the oldest cities in North America; the cosmopolitan city of Montreal, the second largest French speaking city in the world; busy and bustling Toronto home to the iconic CN Tower which remains the tallest structure in the western hemisphere; the natural wonder of the Niagara Falls in the border city of the same name which is fondly known as the ‘Honeymoon Capital of the World’; the ‘Cowtown’ of Calgary internationally famous for its annual Calgary Stampede; Edmonton known for being home to the largest shopping mall in North America, the West Edmonton Mall; and the west coast city of Vancouver which is located in an enviable position and lies within close proximity to one of the country’s most popular attractions, the Rocky Mountains. Containing untold thousands of lakes and rivers, and dominated by the enormous ice-scoured area known as the Canadian Shield which covers more than half of the country, Canada is home to a rich natural beauty which provides visitors with all kinds of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. For the adventurous visitor it is possible to enjoy hiking in the picturesque back-country or white-water raft in raging cold rivers, while for others the appeal may be fishing for that elusive salmon, canoeing through crystal clear waters or horse riding in remote locations. During the winter months visitors can experience alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, dog-sledding and ice skating surrounded by some of the best scenery in the world, which more often than not can be better pursued in any of the 41 national parks, or the numerous provincial parks which can be found throughout the country.
Canada is a land of extreme variety as it stretches from the snow capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains which follow the rugged and island-strewn coastline of the Pacific Ocean, across the enormous central plains and the Great Lakes of the interior, to the rocky headlands and raging waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. From its southern border with the U.S.A. the country moves across the productive Prairie Provinces towards the northern lowland tundra regions and on to the frozen wastelands and numerous islands of the Arctic Circle, where the land remains permanently frozen and home to the ancient native peoples. The name of the country originates from Kanata, an Iroquois aboriginal word that means village or settlement, and Canada is home to many Inuit and 630 recognised First Nation peoples. The First Nation peoples add an interesting facet to the cultural diversity of Canada and can best be appreciated through the numerous native museums and galleries, and the extensive artworks such as the Totem Poles of the west coast which are displayed for visitors.
