The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) is located in the southern hook of the Persian Gulf, and extends through the Arabian Peninsula that separates the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The U.A.E. is a federation of seven emirates which united in 1971 to form the country and include Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. Of these, the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the better known, with their international cities of the same name being the most popular and frequently visited destinations. This popularity was created initially as the cities became stopover locations for many airline passengers enroute to Europe and Africa, but more recently due to the rapidly growing tourist industry which provides visitors with an enviable climate, endless hours of sunshine, beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear seas. This has been complemented through the development of a massive infrastructure consisting of numerous world class luxury hotels and fantastic shopping complexes which have been constructed over the last few years. The tourist industry is benefitted by many international airlines, including the rapidly growing national carriers of Etihad and Emirates, which use the U.A.E. as a major world transport hub. This continues to ensure that many visitors travel to the U.A.E. using these cosmopolitan cities as transit locations although today the country deserves to be recognised as more than only a stopover destination. Combined with an interesting, exciting and intriguing culture, it’s no wonder that tourism in the U.A.E. is one of the fastest growing sectors of the local economy.
The U.A.E. is bordered by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the west and south, and the Sultanate of Oman to the east, and is home to an estimated 8.3 million people. The population is one of the most diverse in the Middle East, with an estimated 85% being non citizens, with almost half of this group coming from India and Pakistan. They have been attracted to the U.A.E. primarily for work, the high standard of living and the better economic opportunities that exist. The capital of the U.A.E. is the modern, island city of Abu Dhabi, while the largest city of Dubai (population over 3.4 million) is an emerging world business and transport hub. The country is rich in oil, and has expanded and diversified its economy into areas such as real estate and tourism which are aided by the growth of Etihad Airways, which is based in Abu Dhabi, and Emirates Airline, which is based in Dubai.
The bulk of the population of the U.A.E. lives in the city metropolitan areas, which in turn leaves large tracts of the country almost totally empty, supporting only small villages and mining camps. The U.A.E. is formed of contrasting landscapes which range from awesome and inspiring sand dunes, to rich oasis, precipitous rocky-mountains and fertile plains. The desert dominates life in the U.A.E. and has created a great affinity between the people and the camel which is highlighted through camel racing that has grown to become one of the country’s major sports. Home to 15 race tracks, this national passion of the U.A.E. includes camel and horse racing with the world’s richest horse race being the Dubai World Cup.

When visiting any Muslim state, you must be aware of the potential problems of Ramadan, a holy period which extends over a month when all adult Muslims have to abstain from food, drink and tobacco between sunrise and sunset. Ramadan is based on the lunar cycle, so the actual dates change every year. During this period, non-Muslim women should dress modestly, should not wear short skirts or bare their arms, and all visitors should show consideration by not smoking, drinking or eating in public. Ramadan highlights the virtues of endurance, tolerance and respect for fellow human beings.
When visiting the United Arab Emirate it is worth considering the temperature. The winter months of November to March enjoy pleasant daytime temperatures around 23 degrees centigrade, while summer temperatures can be in the mid 40’s at which time even the sea temperature can reach the mid 30’s. Although the U.A.E. is a Muslim state it has become acceptable to wear swimsuits (trunks, one-piece and bikinis) at the beach or besides the pool, and drinking within the confines of hotels is deemed satisfactory.
