Switzerland
Switzerland is a country of great diversity from its picture postcard scenery of lake and mountain vistas, beautiful historic cultured cities and quaint traditional villages, exciting hiking through high mountain passes and awesome skiing, railways and cablecars, neat vineyards and cheese making factories, ancient Cathedrals and museums, great restaurants and interesting bars, art galleries and world class shopping, alphorns and apple strudel!! All this located in central Europe, a quick flight from all of the continent’s major cities, and easily accessible by an unbelievably punctual and reliable rail network and good quality roads!!
The country is the second most alpine area in Europe with 60% of its landscape being covered by the Swiss Alps, part of the Western Alpine chain which is the steepest and most contorted mountain group in Europe. Switzerland is home to many world class and famous destinations, such as the ski fields of St Moritz, Zermatt and Villars, the awesome mountains of the Jungfrau, Monch and the Eiger, the amazingly picturesque city of Lucerne, the historic city of Berne the Federal Capital of Switzerland, the attractive and charming city of Zurich, considered to be the cultural and economic centre of the country, and the cosmopolitan city of Geneva!!
Switzerland is also home to some amazing natural wonders such as the striking profile of the Matterhorn which dominates the village of Zermatt - Europe’s highest free-falling waterfall in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, also known as the ‘valley of 72 waterfalls’ an area of natural outstanding beauty – or the awesome alpine views from the Klien Matterhorn area which is serviced by the world’s highest cable-car from Zermatt and from where you can see the mountains of France, Italy and most of Switzerland, it is from here that skiers can enjoy a 13 kilometre ski run which has a 2200 metres vertical descent – or enjoy a meal at the world’s first revolving restaurant at Piz Gloria which sits on the summit of the Schilthorn at 2970 metres!! It was here the James Bond movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ was filmed.
Due to the compact size of Switzerland you are never far from the spectacular sights and sounds of the country from the natural beauty that makes up most of the landscape, the historic towns, the mouth watering restaurants or the noisy bars, it’s all here just waiting for you!!
The country has three distinct natural areas, in the south lies the Bernese Oberland (highlands) which is formed by the Alpine ranges with their snow capped peaks, glaciers, high passes and green mountain pastures with pristine, picturesque villages, the Mittelland (midlands) in which lie the fertile plains of the Swiss plateau and several tranquil lakes, and the northern regions bordering France where the rolling wooded hills of the Jura Mountains stand and the majestic River Rhine and Lake Constance separates Switzerland from Germany. The land-locked nation is home to approximately 7.5 million people and being at the centre of Europe has become a crossroads of cultures with 4 national languages (French, German, Italian and Romansh) giving the nation an open mindedness and cosmopolitan atmosphere in every corner of the country.
