Singapore
Located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and just 137 kilometres north of the equator can be found the island city-state of the Republic of Singapore. Comprised of 63 islands, which cover only 700 square kilometres, the republic is the smallest country in South East Asia. The capital of the republic is the frenetic city of Singapore which is located on the largest of the islands that is called Singapore Island. The main Singapore Island nestles into the coastline of Malayasia which it is separated from by the 50 kilometre long Strait of Johore, and is nearly completely covered by the urbanised metropolitan area and the skyscrapers of downtown Singapore. Within the republic there are four other islands of substantial size with the most popular being the resort island of Sentosa which lies almost due south of the city. Singapore has a population of approximately 5 million (2010 census), most of whom live on the main island, and is considered to provide its residents with the highest quality of living in Asia. The republic is a major trade and transport centre as it is home to Changi Airport which is one of South-East Asia’s main airline hubs, and also boasts the exemplary Singapore Port facility that is one of the five busiest ports in the world. The city of Singapore has grown to become a major financial, commercial, communications and tourist centre due to its location at the crossroads of South East Asia. Singapore enjoys a tropical climate that means that there is generally little pronounced change in the weather which remains typically hot and humid throughout the year.

Singapore Island is a major tourist centre, and for many air travellers has become a stop-over destination while they change planes, or take a break on the long-haul flights to and from Europe. This inflow of travellers has created a high demand for interesting things to do and see, and Singapore has responded by opening its doors to its diverse culture and traditional cuisine, and offers visitors a varied assortment of activities, attractions and several interesting and colourful annual festivals. The city is known for its great shopping and provides visitors with two new casinos, the massive Universal Studios Theme Park, the amazing Sands Skypark, the huge Singapore Flyer, orchid farms, tropical gardens, the renowned Singapore Zoo, interesting museums, boat rides and cable car trips which help to explore this surprising city. The city was built by a cosmopolitan workforce that has left behind unique ethnic centres which reflect the cultural heritage of the city and provides visitors with a wonderful opportunity to explore this interesting city. Tourism is one of the country’s major industries, with over 10 million visitors (2007) arriving to enjoy the great hotels, the fascinating mix of cultures and the vast range of activities on offer. Although visitors generally only stay a short while there is so much to enjoy, and so much to see and do, it would be better to prolong your stay for a few days!!

Modern Singapore can be traced from 29th January 1819, when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles landed on the main island, and saw its potential as a strategic trading port along the historic ‘spice route’. A treaty was signed with Sultan Hussein Shah, and the fishing village on the island became part of the British East India Company, and the settlement began to change, growing into the exciting vibrant city it is today, with a rich ethnic culture and historic heritage. Singapore has a strong and rapidly growing economy which is helped by its diversification into foreign exchange, electronics, manufacturing and tourism, making it one of the wealthiest countries in the world!! The Port of Singapore is also one of the busiest sea ports in the world, with over 600 shipping lines sending their super tankers, container ships and cruise liners to use the port facilities. The port also provides extended entrepot trade services (i.e. warehousing, trading and distribution services), which historically was the backbone of the economy of Singapore. Located on the eastern tip of the island can be found Changi Airport, which is home to the national carrier, Singapore Airlines. The airport is a major transport hub in South East Asia and hosts 80 additional airline carriers.
