The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (S.A.R.) is one of the two special regions within the People’s Republic of China, and is located on the south coast of mainland China. The S.A.R. consists of three main territories including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories which lie along the Sham Chun River and is where the region borders with mainland China. The Hong Kong S.A.R. includes approximately 260 islands of which Lantau and Hong Kong are the two largest, and covers an area of 1,100 square kilometres, much of which is comprised of hilly and mountainous areas with steep slopes. In the north there are some lowland areas, while parts of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula have been reclaimed from the sea. The Hong Kong S.A.R. is dominated by the busy, bustling and dynamic city of Hong Kong which is recognised as one of the world’s ‘Global Cities’. In 1997, the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred from the United Kingdom to the People’s Republic of China, and the Special Administrative Region was formed. It was agreed that Hong Kong would retain its own laws and a high degree of self government for at least 50 years, which meant that much of the city would remain largely unchanged. Due to the earlier British influence, most street and commercial signs in the city remain in Chinese and English, and English continues to be one of the official languages which can help to make any visit an easy and enjoyable experience.
Hong Kong city is the capital of the S.A.R. and is often described as the place ‘where East meets West’. It is a frenetic, cosmopolitan city and one of the world’s important centres for international finance and trade. The influence of Hong Kong permeates the S.A.R. which has a highly capitalistic economy, built on a policy of a free market, low taxation and low governmental intervention. The city is known to have the highest concentration of corporate head offices in the Asian Pacific Region, which is reflected in the local economy that is dominated by the service rather than the manufacturing sector which was once the strongest part of the economy. The C.B.D. is located around the deep and sheltered waters of Victoria Harbour, which today is a centre of modern architecture and is known for its outstanding skyline of high rise buildings that at night come alive with the world’s largest light show, the ‘Symphony of Light’.
Lantau and Hong Kong are the two biggest islands in the group, and lying across Victoria Harbour and opposite the city of Hong Kong lies Kowloon, one of the most densely populated areas in the region. The S.A.R. has a population of just over 7 million residents which makes it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Although the region is considered fully urbanized, much of the land, particularly in the northern New Territories, is undeveloped due to its hilly and mountainous nature. Having a long and sinuous coastline, the area has many bays and beaches, and with the country parks, such as Tai Tam Country Park in the south-east of Hong Kong Island, there are surprisingly many places where nature can be enjoyed. Being an island region, many ferries and hydrofoils ply the waters, making inter-island transport cheap and effective. Hong Kong International Airport is located on the island of Chek Lap Kok, which now forms part of Lantau Island through reclamation work. The airport is recognised as one of the world’s largest constructions and serves over 45 million air passengers each year. Hong Kong airport is one of the main airline hubs of South East Asia and serves many airlines including Cathay Pacific and Dragonair. Although the airport is several kilometres from the city, transport to and from Hong Kong is fast, affordable and reliable.
Most visitors to the Hong Kong S.A.R. have come to see Hong Kong city, which is an exciting, unique and vibrant destination that offers living proof of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. The city offers numerous world class attractions and activities to make any visit a time to remember. Unfortunately many visitors to Hong Kong only stay a couple of days and use the city as a stopover to ease the long journey to and from Europe, however with so much to see and do the region deserves a little more time to explore and enjoy.
