The Federal Republic of Germany, known simply as Germany, is the largest country by population and the third largest by size within Western Europe and is considered one of the more prosperous countries of the European Community. It is a popular tourist destination with people visiting the country for its culture – being the birthplace of well known musicians such as Bach and Beethoven, and home to many museums, galleries and well known festivals such as the Oktoberfest and the Rhine in Flames, its history – being covered with many traditional towns, villages and renowned landmarks such as the Berlin Wall and the impressive Cologne Cathedral, and its scenic beauty – having such appealing areas as the romantic Black Forest, the beautiful Rhine Gorge and the Bavarian Alps within its borders. There are 25 U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage Sites within the country to visit which cover a plethora of locations from the Roman period to the modern times, and unique and interesting modern architectural sites to see, such as those by Frank O. Gehry which include the Gehry Tower in Hanover and the three buildings called ‘Neuer Zollhof 1,2 and 3 in the old harbour area of Dusseldorf, and with the addition of great beers, wines and delectable foods, it all makes any holiday to Germany a very pleasurable, interesting and exciting event.
It is a land of contrasts stretching from the northern lowlands with the windswept coasts of the North and Baltic Seas with their picturesque islands, the historic city-port of Hamburg with its famous Reeperbahn, to the southern Lake Constance, a popular water sports destination and the awe inspiring Bavarian Alps, which are home to the picturesque fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, the Passion Play in Oberammergau, tranquil lakes, mountain passes and snow capped peaks. From the west, Germany stretches from the wine country regions of the well known river-cruise areas of the Rhine and Moselle rivers with their deep gorges and spectacular scenery of manicured vine covered hills and the cities Heidelberg, Cologne and the federal city of Bonn, to the sparsely populated and heavily forested mountains of the south-eastern Bohemian Forests, the historic city of Dresden once known as ‘Florence on the Elbe’, and in the north-east the eccentric capital of Berlin!! The central areas of the country are covered with a beautiful and varied rolling landscape, home to the famous Black Forest district which is known for its Cuckoo Clocks and hiking trails, the Romantic Road, a traditional north/south trade route which is considered one of Germany’s most scenic tours, and Franconia Switzerland, an area of stunning beauty of small rural villages, hilltop castles and countless hiking paths and the major cities of Frankfurt am Main the financial heart of Germany, Stuttgart and historic Munich with its famous ‘beer culture’ and home to the Oktoberfest.
The population of 83 million is dotted throughout the country with more than 40 cities having over 200,000 inhabitants and the capital of Berlin being the largest at only 3.4 million, which compared to other European capital cities, is not particularly large. The villages, towns and cities of Germany have great appeal for visitors and have managed to retain much of their cultural heritage in the form of well kept and picturesque cobbled streets and market squares, ornate Cathedrals, historic churches, old stone fortresses and medieval palace buildings. These historic centres are filled with old world charm and atmosphere that permeates the winding alleyways and their half-timbered houses and are often complete with old cultural traditions of costume, foods and beverages. The Federal Republic of Germany is located in north-central Europe and is comprised of 16 states and maintains its capital at Berlin. The country borders several European nations, namely Denmark to the north, Poland to the north-east, the Czech Republic to the east, Austria to the south and east, Switzerland to the south, France to the south-west, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west. The country has substantial water access via the north-west coastline which adjoins the North Sea and the north-east coastline which adjoins the Baltic Sea, and is crossed by the largest rivers in Europe, the Rhine, with its tributaries the Moselle, Main and Neckar, the Elbe and the Danube. The total land area of Germany is 349,223 square kilometres.
