The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of Tongariro National Park's special gifts. A cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views combine to make this an enjoyable and memorable trip. It is also regarded as one of New Zealand's great one day tramps. As it is a full day hike into a mountain environment, covering steep and often difficult terrain and often subject to severe weather it is important to plan and prepare properly. Weather conditions can change quickly and dramatically. It is important to have the appropriate clothing, equipment and fitness level. This trip should not be undertaken in winter without mountaineering experience and equipment.
Please contact the National Park Village or Tongariro Crossing website for current information on the conditions. The crossing spans the length of Mt Tongariro (18.5 Kilometres) and takes about 7-9 hours. You start from the Mangatepopo Valley and walk over towards the Ketetahi road end as this will minimise the climbing involved. You need to arrange transport to the beginning of the trek and pick up from the end of the day with your accommodation provider in National Park Village.
